Chapter Eighteen
I stared at myself in the mirror in amazement. Hayden was constantly full of surprises. I looked nothing like my normal self, and yet, I was totally me. He bought me a T-shirt dress like one of those fitted ones that a really hot rock star would wear. It was cut so one of my shoulders was exposed, and it sat a little too low across my chest, but it actually wasnât so bad. I would have expected him to pick out something that had my boobs hanging out. It had the image of the cover of Led Zeppelinâs first album on it, and it made me think about how he wanted me to name my guitar after Jimmy Page.
My only hesitation about it was the length. It was short. Again, not so short that I felt exposed but shorter than anything in my closet. It was a dress, though, so that alone would make it the winner. When I really examined myself, I think I was more surprised at how long it made my legs look. Of course, I was so self-conscious about my height that I didnât know why he picked something out that accentuated that part of me.
Then I opened the box, and my question was answered. Long black suede high-heeled boots lay inside. I blinked down at them. There was no way I could wear these. Then I heard my phone alert me that I had a new message.
Put them on Hazel. Own your height. Plus, when you are about to face your enemy, itâs always better to have the high ground.
I looked around to try to find a camera he must have hidden in my room. It was crazy how often he seemed to text me at the perfect time. Haydenâs text worked, though, of course. He had a way of making me do things so outside my comfort zone while simultaneously making me feel comfortable.
I slipped my foot into the boot and zipped my leg into it; the boot came up just over my knee. I hurried with the second one, and when I looked in the mirror again, I realized my height, which I had now added about two inches to, was still very noticeable, but now only a little portion of my thigh was actually showing. I relaxed. This outfit made me feel like a sexy version of myself, I realized. It covered me almost as much as my ripped jeans and T-shirt yet somehow made me feel way womanlier.
I blushed. Hayden was really good at this. He should dress all the girls out there who were going on fake revenge dates. I laughed. While I was trying to figure out my hair, another text message reached me.
Leave it down. No pins. No clips. Iâm serious. If I see it up, Iâm just going to undo it. And borrow lipstick from your mom. Something soft. Pink. You want him to regret giving away those luscious lips. And do it quick. Iâll be there in five minutes.
